If I had been studying cartography in college I would have wanted to make a map like this. What to call sweetened, carbonated beverages was a huge source of linguistic division on campus. I really wish this mapped showed more than the most common terms. Some others I have heard are soda water, soda pop, sody pop, sody, tonic, cold drink, fizzy drink and drink.

What do you call it in your home town? Answer at popvssoda.com. If you want to see some other terms people have submitted you can look at their stats. Apparently some people in California call it Tarzan slam and some people in Wisconsin call it Luke? And in Wyoming some people call it Mountain dew. Just be warned that some have filled out the “other” field in some unconventional ways.

Anasazi Ruins: Part I

I wish I had been there to take these pictures. This is one of series I will be posting as I slowly sift through them. My mom and aunt borrowed the camera and took a road trip to see the Anasazi ruins. There are only a few things in architecture I love as much as ruins. I have seen some line drawings and photos of ancient North American ruins before, but they never hit me like these images (which I have express permission to post on my blog. Thanks Ma.) Around here it is easy to think that there are only two landscapes – the modern man-made cities that date back only a few hundred years, and the untouched wilderness. The photos to come are a gorgeous reminder that there are also ancient masterpieces here, striking in their scale, their precision, and their relation to the landscape.

Maybe one day, when I have all the time in the world, I am going to plant myself an underwater garden. This is some beautiful ocean foliage in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. It is growing among the rocks, which are speckled by tiny snails, barnacles, and their own spots.
